Current Exhibition

ATLANTIC EDITIONS III
April 3 - May 1, 2007

This exhibition features the work of the many remarkable printmakers who are represented at Fog Forest Gallery. These artists are creating beautiful hand-made art prints which require a strong technical knowledge and confidence. Whether the work is produced as a serigraph or an etching, it has been created and produced by the artist directly - by hand - and in small editions.

"Intaglio" is a word derived from the Italian word for "cut in" or "engrave". It stands for any of several print making methods -engraving, etching, drypoint, aquatint or mezzotint - which all have this is common: The areas which print onto the paper have been cut, scratched or chemically bitten into metal plate - usually zinc or copper. Printing lines or areas go below the surface of the printing plate. they're cut in - hence, intaglio.

Ink is forced into these lines, and the uncut surface of the plate is gently wiped clean of ink. To print the ink from the lines onto the paper requires a great deal of pressure. Dampened paper is placed upon the printing plate and both are run through a special press of two cylinders which resembles a giant wringer.
The porous, dampened paper is pressed against the plate so that it is forced into the incisions on the plate and the design is printed.

Serigraphs, or silkscreen-printing, as we know it today evolved from stencil printing, one of the oldest of all printing methods. A stencil for each individual color is transferred to a screen, which is typically made of silk, nylon or wire mesh stretched tightly across a frame. The ink is dragged over the screen with a squeegee and forced through the open areas of the stencil. In this way, the image is transferred to a piece of paper positioned beneath the screen. Each successive color requires a new screen and stencil to slowly build the image layer upon layer, creating the rich painterly textures that set serigraphs apart from other forms of printmaking.

Because of the painstaking labor of color separation, color application, press time and drying, a hand-pulled fine art serigraph edition takes many days to complete.

Hand-made art prints, like intaglio, woodblock and serigraph prints generally are printed only in limited editions of a pre-determined number. At the bottom of each print, the artist will number the print and sign it in pencil, sometimes adding the title and the year. This signifies the artist's approval of the quality of the print.
