This exhibition featured the work of the many remarkable printmakers who are represented by Fog Forest Gallery. These artists create beautiful hand-made art prints which require a strong technical knowledge and confidence. Whether the work is produced as a serigraph or an etching, it has been created and produced by the artist directly - by hand - and in small editions.

Below are brief descriptions of some of the processes involved in the various techniques. I hope this is helpful in providing a greater understanding of printmaking.

Serigraphs, or silkscreen-printing, as we know it today evolved from stencil printing, one of the oldest of all printing methods. A stencil for each individual color is transferred to a screen, which is typically made of silk, nylon or wire mesh stretched tightly across a frame. The ink is dragged over the screen with a squeegee and forced through the open areas of the stencil. In this way, the image is transferred to a piece of paper positioned beneath the screen. Each successive color requires a new screen and stencil to slowly build the image layer upon layer, creating the rich painterly textures that set serigraphs apart from other forms of printmaking.

Because of the painstaking labor of color separation, color application, press time and drying, a hand-pulled fine art serigraph edition takes many days to complete.
