Dan Steeves

Born in Riverview, New Brunswick, Dan graduated with a B.F.A. from Mount Allison University in 1981. He has received many awards such as The Canada Council Exhibition Award (1990), Out of Province Solo Exhibition Award (1990), Marjorie Young Bell Fine Arts Award (1989), Solo Exhibition Award, Department of Historical and Cultural Resources N.B. (1984), and the Elizabeth Greenshields Award. Recently, Dan Steeves was nominated for the 2006 Strathbutler Award and won this award in 2007. Congratulations Dan.

Dan’s work focuses on the interaction of the family through various domestic objects. His images have a consistent theme of inner searching in an attempt to challenge the spiritual side of our humanness. “Art is basically telling the world what’s going on for you in your life, and how you see the world,” says Dan, “And it doesn’t have to become so alienated that no one else can relate to it. There’s a relationship, because we all face these things. I think that’s what real art is about.”

His works have been included in exhibitions in Canada, Japan, Taiwan, Ukraine, and the United States. His work is represented in the Chernobyl Disaster Museum in Kharkov, Ukraine, Canada Art Bank, University of New Brunswick Art Centre, New Brunswick Art Bank, Owens Art Gallery, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, and Estate of Hon. Richard Hatfield to name a few.
